Matthew Chapter 26

Matthew 26:2 – Heading for the Cross

“You realize that after two days the Passover takes place; 1 and, the Son of Humankind will be turned in to be executed.” 2
1 The Passover takes place: Or, BER: the Passover is celebrated. It must be about Nisan 12 and the moon is waxing. Luke 22:1 adds, “… the festival of the unfermented cakes.” This was a festival lasting eight days beginning Nisan 14 at sundown (Exodus chapter 12).
2 To be executed: The Greek is STAUROTHENAI and literally means “to be impaled on a stake” though most would prefer the Latin derivatives, “crucified.” Research the Greek STAUROO.

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

We choose Matthew 26:2 as the theme verse of chapter twenty-six – On to Victory! It is now two days before the execution of the Nazarene Master. [1, 2] The Jewish religious hierarchy as a body were plotting to kill Jesus. [3-5] Jesus praises a woman who will be remembered as part of the Gospel. [6-13] Judas is willing to betray the Master for the cost of a Jewish slave. 14-16] Jesus makes preparations for the Passover. [17-19] Christ observes the last Passover with his apostles. [20-25] He institutes a new observance of his death – Memorial, Eucharist, Lord’s Supper. [26-30] Jesus predicts the desertion of the apostles that very night. [31-35]

Jesus and the apostles leave to spend the night in a prayer garden. [36-39] Three times he pleads with his Father to arrange another type of death, one that will not bring reproach on Him. [40-47] Finally a mob of Jewish clerics arrives, led by Judas. [48-56] The Nazarene is first taken to the Jewish priest Caiaphas. [57, 58] False witnesses bring lying charges against Jesus. [59-68] Jesus predicts the Jews will live to see the fulfillment of Psalm 110:1 and Daniel 7:13. Early that morning Peter denies Christ three times. [69-75]

Abba our Father bless those who remember Christ’s death.

Notes from the People’s New Testament by B. W. Johnson -

  • For the origin of this feast, see Ex 12:1-14. It was really the Jewish emancipation day, the greatest of their feasts, and the paschal lamb was a type of the slain Christ.
