John Chapter 14

John 14:26 – A Spiritual Helper

“But, the Helper – the holy Pneuma which the Father will send in my name 1 – that one will teach you [apostles] everything, 2 and will heighten your memories of everything I told you 3 [apostles].”
1 The holy Pneuma which the Father will send in my name: Or, holy spirit. See notes elsewhere on Pneuma. The holy Pneuma is God’s force of mind with its manifold manifestations in the lives of the apostles. The apostles always performed their signs and miracles through the pressure of the Pneuma and in the authority of the name of Jesus. [Acts 2:38; 3:6; 4:10; 16:18]
2 That one will teach you [apostles] everything: Or, he; all things. The Helper is a spiritual teacher by the mental force of God which exerts a pressure on the heart and mind of the person serving as a teaching instrument. Judging from the teachings that followed, this “help” materialized in the many inspired writings of some of the apostles, such as Matthew, Peter, and John. Later, by the personal selection of Jesus Christ, Paul became an inspired apostle who contributed a large portion of the Christian Bible. Thus, when these men teach in their writings they really speak for God by means of Jesus Christ and the holy Pneuma. [2 Timothy 3:16; 1 John 4:1] “Everything” is later described as “all truth.” [John 16:13]
3 Heighten your memories of everything I told you: Or, KJV: bring all things to your remembrance; RHM: put you in mind of; BER: remind you of all that I told you; TCN: recall to your minds. The Greek is HYPO-MNESEI [under + memory]. The Helper can remind the apostles only of those things they personally witnessed or heard. It is for this reason that whole portions of the Nazarene’s teachings can be recalled under the pressure of the holy Pneuma and then recorded for future generations of believers. See notes on John 17:20.

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

We choose John 14:26 as the theme verse of chapter fourteen – Another Helper. We continue to see Jesus with his faithful apostles at the Last Supper. He tells them he is leaving to prepare a place for them, but that he will return to take them home to himself. [1-3] The Nazarene Master teaches that he is the Way, the Truth and the Life. [5-7] Jesus teaches his apostles that if they have seen him they have experienced the Father. [8-14] He says that if they truly love him they will keep his commandments. [15-21] In his absence he promises to send a Helper which he calls “the spirit of the truth.”

The apostles wonder how they will see Jesus but not the world. [22-24] Christ will take up residence with those who show they love by obedience to his commandments. The promised Helper will teach the apostles everything. [25-31] It will restore to their memories everything they heard Jesus teach.

Abba our Father bless those who have learned from the “spirit of the truth.”

Notes from the People’s New Testament by B. W. Johnson -

A special promise to the apostles, which fitted them to preach the Gospel authoritatively and leave behind them the records of the New Testament.
