John Chapter 19

John 19:30 – “It Has Been Accomplished”

Therefore, when he had received the vinegar, Jesus said, “It has been accomplished!” 1 And then his head fell and his last breath escaped. 2
1 It has been accomplished: Or, it is finished, the task is done. The last words of the Nazarene during “the days of his flesh.” [Hebrews 5:7] For more details on this moment see the notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000© on Matthew 27:45-50. [Mark 15:33-39; Luke 23:44-46]
2 And then his head fell and his last breath escaped: Or, KJV: bowed his head, and gave up the spirit; RIE: gave up his life. The Greek PNEUMA is first literally breath, or wind. [Compare Ecclesiastes 12:7.]

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

We choose John 19:30 as the theme verse of chapter nineteen – Execution and Burial. Jesus is abused before Pilate but the Roman governor can find no fault in him. [1-7] Jesus does not respond to all of Pilate’s questions. [8-11] The Jewish crowd calls for the death of the Nazarene. [12-16] Christ is impaled at Golgotha. [17-22] Soldiers cast lots on Christ’s garments in fulfillment of Psalm 22:18. [23, 24] At his last Jesus puts his mother in the care of his beloved apostle. [25-27] Having said, “It has been accomplished,” Jesus expires. [28-30] A solider stabs Jesus with his spear. [31-34] The apostle John gives his own eyewitness testimony and references Psalm 34:20 and Zechariah 12:10. [35-37] Jesus is prepared for his burial.

Abba our Father bless those who believe John’s Gospel.
