2 Timothy Chapter 1

2 Timothy 1:13 – “Hold the Pattern of Healthful Words”

So, [Timothy], keep holding on to that pattern of healthy words 1 that you heard from me by deep conviction and compassionate affection 2 that reside in Christ Jesus.
1 Keep holding on to that pattern of healthy words: Or, RSV: Follow the pattern of the sound words; KJV: sound words; ABUV: healthful; GDS: wholesome instruction. Paul has taught and instructed Timothy and he charges him now to follow these teachings. He is to go on to mention some false teachers which have misled others. [2 Timothy 1:15; 2:17] May Timothy be in danger?
2 Deep conviction and compassionate affection: Or, faith and love. The two primary elements of God’s commandment. [See Nazarene Commentary 2000© notes on 1 John 3:23.] Paul mentions these again to Timothy.

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

Today we move on into Paul’s second epistle to Timothy in which he exhorts the young elder to “fully accomplish your ministry.” We choose 2 Timothy 1:13 as the theme verse of chapter one – Stir the Coals! Paul writes to “my beloved child.” [1, 2] He writes that he never forgets Timothy in his prayers. [3-5] He remembers Timothy’s pure faith, as well as that of his grandmother and mother.

Paul exhorts Timothy to “stir up like a fire your gift.” [6-11] God does not give a spirit of cowardice but rather one of power, love and soundness of mind. He exhorts Timothy not to become ashamed of the Christian message. Timothy ought to continue to “hold on to healthy words.” [12-14] He should “protect and preserve” the godly trust given to him.

Paul mentions those who have deserted him as well as those who brought him cooling refreshment. [15-18] There is the suggestion in Paul’s words that some how Timothy has backed off a bit from his original zeal. Paul points to godly examples that have not been ashamed of his imprisonment. It is likely the caution about “a spirit of cowardice” is directed straight at Timothy.

Abba our Father bless those who hold on to healthy teaching.

Notes from the People’s New Testament by B. W. Johnson -

Hold and teach sound doctrine, the pure faith, the gospel as Paul taught it to him, preaching it in faith and love.
