2 Timothy Chapter 3

2 Timothy 3:17 – Equipped for Good Work in Critical Times

Thus, the man of God may be completely prepared 1 for every good work. 2
1 Completely prepared: Or, KJV: perfect; MOF: proficient; NEB: efficient; GDS: adequate; WMS: perfectly fit; TAY: well-prepared at every point; BAR: fit for his task. The inspired Scriptures are enough to accomplish this perfection of the man of God. Paul does not state that Timothy, or any other man of God, needs some in addition to these to make him complete.
2 For every good work: Or, KJV: thoroughly furnished unto all good works; RHM: well-prepared; BER: adequately equipped; WMS: thoroughly equipped. All the man of God needs is to be so equipped are the Scriptures. No mention is made of the need for another instrument. That does not mean God has not supplied other “gifts” which also be of help. Compare notes on Ephesians 4:11-16. [1 Corinthians 12] Research good work(s).

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

We choose 2 Timothy 3:17 as the theme verse of chapter three – Fierce Times Ahead. Paul warns Timothy that critical times are to occur during those “last days” upon the Jewish religious system with its Temple in Jerusalem. [1-7] Paul describes what Timothy can expect from some Christians within the Church. He is instructed to “avoid such people.”

Disapproved imposters are to appear. [8-13] These people will “oppose the Truth” and “resist” appointed authority. They will produce “a counterfeit faith.” Paul urges Timothy to follow him and his teaching, life-style, life purpose, love and endurance, ready to endure persecutions. For “wicked men and counterfeits will just get worse and worse.”

Paul counsels Timothy to “continue in the things learned.” [14-17] Timothy was raised in the “sacred writings” and these can make a person “wise for salvation.” All Scripture is “God-breathed” or divinely inspired and may be used for teaching, for reproving, for readjustments and for disciplining in righteousness. In this manner the man of God will be “completely prepared for every good work.”

Abba our Father bless those who become “wise for salvation.”

Notes from the People’s New Testament by B. W. Johnson -

Fully equipped. If he is master of the Holy Scriptures, he is so equipped. If this was true when Paul wrote, with only a part of the New Testament written, with what emphasis may it be said now when we have both the Old and New Testaments in full!
