Dear Friends of the Nazarene,
We choose Hebrews 5:10 as the theme verse of chapter five. Paul continues now with the subject he introduced in the previous chapter – God’s High Priest. [1-3] It is God who appoints priests to offer up sacrifices regarding sins. Since Jewish high priests had their own failings they were able to deal with worshippers compassionately. In a similar manner Christ, like Aaron, was called by God to a priesthood. [4-6] Paul quotes one of his favorite Psalms [Psalm 110:3] to show that God’s Son was also a priest like Melchizedek.
God’s Son was only inaugurated [perfected] after he had learned obedience. [7-10] Only God could save him from death. After suffering with outcries and tears Christ became responsible for salvation to all those who are obedient to God.
However, these Hebrew Christians were in great danger because they had become “sluggish in their hearing.” [11-14] They had been Christians for some time but still needed to be taught the most elementary teachings of God’s Word. They were like babies who needed milk and not solid food. Solid nourishment belongs to the mature who have trained hard to know what is good or bad.
Abba our father bless the obedient.
