1 John Chapter 1

1 John 1:7 – Illuminated Fellowship

If we are walking in the Light, 1 just as Jesus is in the Light, 2 we have a communion together 3 and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
1 Walking in the Light: Or, TCN: if our lives are lived in the Light. John 1:9, “The real Light illuminating all people was about to arrive on earth.” “Walk” is a way of saying “conduct” [or, lifestyle] and here refers to that conduct which is the antithesis of following the Nazarene’s footsteps. True communion with God the Father is manifest by the life-style (a modern way of putting it) of the claimant. The roots for this are in Matthew 7:15-21 and mountain teachings. Compare Matthew 5:14-16; 1 Peter 2:9.
2 Jesus is in the Light: Possibly referring the Son.
3 A communion together: Or, KJV: fellowship. Compare 1 Corinthians 10:16, 17.

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

Today we begin to examine the first epistle of the beloved apostle John. It may be titled, “How to know God.” We choose 1 John 1:7 as the theme verse of chapter one – A Community of Light. John introduces his inspired epistle with a lovely image of a fellowship with the Father and the Son. [1-4] John and his associates were eyewitnesses of “the Word of the Life” – Jesus. Christians have an illuminated fellowship or communion with God, His Son and one another. [5-7] The Christian who claims to have a communion with God and yet walks in darkness is a liar. Those who claim they have no sin are self-deceived. [8-10] Only by continued and constant confession and repentance will God release and cleanse us from our sins. [8-10]

Abba our Father bless those who fellowship in the Light.
