Every person who pushes ahead1 and does not remain in Christ’s doctrine2 does not have God.3 The person who remains in the Doctrine4 has the Father and also the Son.5
| 1 | Every person who pushes ahead: Or, goes beyond, runs ahead. [1 Corinthians 4:6] |
| 2 | Does not remain in Christ’s doctrine: Or, teaching of Christ. Such may be found in the Gospels and the inspired writings of the Nazarene’s disciples as instruments of the promised pneumatic-helper. [John 16:12, 13] |
| 3 | Does not have God: Or, NOR: does not have hold of God. That is, does not possess a relationship with the God. [John 14:9] |
| 4 | The person who remains in the Doctrine: Or, in that teaching. This is done by continual study and meditation of Christ’s teachings, as well as humbly walking in them by obedience. |
| 5 | Has the Father and also the Son: That is, has a relationship with both the Father and the Son. It is worthy of note that the Spirit is not here mentioned. In this regard compare notes on Matthew 11:27. |
Dear Friends of the Nazarene,
Today we take a look at the beloved apostles second epistle which might be titled: “Walk in Christ’s Doctrine.” We choose 2 John 9 as the theme verse. John as The Elder writes of his love and eternal truth. [1-3] He encourages Christians to continue to walk in the truth and to show love for one another. [4-7] Love for God is manifest by continuing to walk in His commandments. Many deceivers have abandoned the Christian community and returned to the world. Antichrists and deceivers do not believe Jesus came in the flesh.
John urges Christians to remain in Christ’s doctrine or teaching. [8-11] Those who do not remain in the teachings of Christ do not have God. Those antichrists who do not bring this Doctrine should not be welcome in your homes.
John concludes his short letter with anticipation of greater joy when he visits. [12] He sends the greetings of another Christian congregation.
Abba our father bless those who remain in Christ’s Doctrine.
