Locate verse: Type a verse reference like 'Romans 10:9' or abbreviated 'Rm 10:9'. By just typing the verse one can jump to the corresponding verse on the active page (only works if the current page displays a chapter). If a chapter and a verse is entered without a book, the current selected book is assumed. Providing only the name of a book will bring one to the chapter index of that book. Examples (without the quotes): '1 Tim 3:16', 'Rv 1:8', 'Matthew 5', '3:16', '8', 'Phm'.

PSALMS (1-24, 26)

PSALM 2:
ENTHRONED MESSIAH

PS2:1 Why do the non-Jews gather in turmoil? 17 And the peoples plot an empty scheme?
17 Why do the non-Jews gather in turmoil? Or, nations, Gentiles. Both the Hebrew GOY and Greek ETHNOS came to mean all peoples who were not Jewish or Hebrew. Peter quotes these two verses at Acts 4:25, 26 where he applies the prophecy to the Roman and Jewish rulers. Peter also attributes the Second Psalm to David.
PS2:2 Kings of the earth take their stand. And officials meet to conspire plots. They speak against Yehowah and His Messiah: 18
18 Yehowah and His Messiah: Peter calls YHWH DESPOTA or Absolute Lord [Sovereign Lord] in Acts 4:24. It is clear Jehovah is not the same person as Christ or Messiah. The Hebrew here is we’al-MESHI-CHoh’ and the Greek KHRISTOU. Compare also Isaiah 61:1 and Luke 4:16 where the Nazarene makes the same distinction.
PS2:3 “Let us resist their constraints! 19 And cast off their restrictions!”
19 Their constraints: There are two persons mentioned here and the nations resist the law and commandments of both Yehowah and his Christ.
PS2:4 The One enthroned in the Celestialum 20 will laugh. Yehowah will mock them.
20 Celestialum: Or, heaven.
PS2:5 At that moment He will speak angrily 21 to them. And with great displeasure He will confound them:
21 Speak angrily: Or, wrath, indignation, wrath.
PS2:6 “I install my King upon My holy mount of Zion!” 22
22 I install my King upon My holy mount of Zion: Or, KJV: yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion; RHM: installed; ABPS: anointed; NEB: established; KNX: enthrone a king of my choice. Though this verse is not quoted by Peter or Paul the context is sandwiched between their inspired interpretations. This would lead to the conclusion that verse 6 is fulfilled upon the ascension of Christ to heaven. [For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Ephesians 1:10-22.] Daniel 7:13 also foretells Messiah will ascend to his royal appointment. The Risen Lord states the same at Revelation 3:21. Note he is king at Revelation 1:5.
PS2:7 I will announce His decree: 23 “Yehowah told me: 24 ‘You are my Son, today I have given birth to you! 25
23 I will announce His decree: The Son speaks here BEFORE he is installed as King, likely an indication of the pre-existence of Christ.
24 Me: The Messiah, the Son.
25 I have given birth to you: Or, begotten, become your father. This was upon Christ’s resurrection and ascension. [Romans 1:4] Paul quotes this verse twice: Acts 13:33 and Hebrews 1:5.
PS2:8 Ask Me and I will give you the non-Jews as an inheritance. 26 And as your own possession 27 the most distant parts of the earth.
26 Inheritance: Like the Saints, Christ “inherits the earth.” [Matthew 5:5]
27 Possession: The globe of the earth will never be destroyed but becomes the domain or territory of the Messiah’s rule. [Psalm 72:8; 104:5; Ecclesiastes 1:4; Isaiah 45:18] All those who dwell on earth will submit to Christ’s reign. [Daniel 7:13; Philippians 2:9-12] Ultimately it will be returned to an Edenic paradise peopled by those who will obey God’s law and submit to his Christ. [Revelation 11:15-17]
PS2:9 You will shepherd them with an iron scepter. 28 [Revelation 12:9] And you will smash them to pieces like a clay pot!’” [Revelation 2:26, 27; 19:15]
28 You will shepherd them with an iron sceptre: The verse is alluded to at Revelation 2:27 where the Saints share in this reign during the Thousand Years. [Revelation 20:4] The verse is also referenced at Revelation 12:5. Messiah’s reign will include the subjugation of the nations and all God’s enemies. [1 Corinthians 15:24-28] During the Thousand Years this iron sceptre will still be used against sinners. [Isaiah 65:17-22; Zechariah 14:16-19]
PS2:10 So act with wisdom, O kings! And accept correction, you judges of the earth! PS2:11 Serve Yehowah with awe and rejoice with trembling! PS2:12 Bow and kiss the Son 29 lest he becomes angry 30 and you perish from the way! For his anger becomes inflamed suddenly! 31 O how blessed those who seek refuge in him!
29 Kiss the Son: Or, HAR: bow to the ground before him. The Aramaic is nash-shequ-var’. VAR is Aramaic for “son.”
30 He becomes angry: Neither Yehowah or his Messiah are all-forgiving and both are pictured in this psalm as angry and wrathful against those in opposition to them, particular the rulers and judges.
31 Inflamed suddenly: Or, flares up easily, blazes suddenly, quickly burns, quickly provoked. This image of the Son can be seen in Revelation 1:14, 15. It is not the picture most Christians want to hear.
