| Locate verse: Type a verse reference like 'Romans 10:9' or abbreviated 'Rm 10:9'. By just typing the verse one can jump to the corresponding verse on the active page (only works if the current page displays a chapter). PSALMS (1-24, 26)
[A hymn of David]
PS15:1 O Yehowah, who will be a guest in your tent?83
Who shall reside in Your holy mountain?
PS15:2 The person
who walks blamelessly84
and does what is right.85
The person who speaks honestly from the heart.86
83 A guest in your tent: Or, KJV: abide in thy tabernacle; KNX: will make his home in thy tabernacle; NJB: the right to enter. Like a nomadic
Potentate, the question asks who is worthy for God to show his hospitality. The principles can be applied to those who will finally reside in another tent. [Revelation 21:3] 84 Walks blamelessly: Or, KJV: walketh uprightly; PBV: leadeth an uncorrupt life; RHM: walketh without blame. Compare notes on Psalm 1:1.
[Psalm 37:37] It does not mean perfection but rather than person who is known to live a lawful or law-abiding life. 85
Does what is right: Right according to God’s Law and divine principles.
PS15:3 The
person who does not slander87
with the tongue, and who has never wronged a friend,88
nor reproached a neighbor.89
86 Speaks honestly from the heart:
This is a guileless person with any hidden agendas. He/she does not play games with others and is therefore not a person who manipulates others. Compare notes on Matthew 12:35-37. 87 Slander: Or, backbite, hasty with the tongue, treacherous word. Slander is defined as gossip – true or false – repeated with the motive or intent to damage another’s reputation. The Law of Moses forbids slander. [Leviticus 19:16] It is mentioned again at Psalm 101:5. The Proverbs contain several warnings. [Proverbs 11:13; 16:28; 18:8; 20:19; 26:20, 22] For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on 1 Timothy 3:11; Titus 2:3. Compare notes on Matthew 12:35-37. The slanderer will never reside with God in His Tent. 88 Never wronged a friend: Or, evil, defrauds. [Proverbs 14:21] Compare notes on Romans 12:17.
PS15:4 The person who rejects the disgraceful,90
but honors those who revere Yehowah.91
The person who makes an oath to his own hurt92
and does not change his mind.
89 Nor reproached a neighbor: Or, slanders. That is, making any statement that brings reproach on a neighbor. [Proverbs 23:1] 90 Rejects the disgraceful: Or, KJV: in whose eyes a vile person is contemned; RSV: a reprobate is despised; NEB: shows his scorn for the
worthless. This is a person not afraid to rebuke someone disgraceful for vile conduct. 91 Honors those who revere Yehowah:
Or, fear. The Tetragram occurs here [YHWH], so David does not mean someone who fears some god, but rather those who fear Yehowah.
PS15:5 The person who does not loan money on interest,93
nor has ever accepted a bribe94
against someone innocent. The person who behaves this way95
will never stumble96
throughout ageless periods of time.92
Oath to his own hurt: Or, KJV: sweareth to his own hurt; MOF: keeps his oath; KNX: is true, come what may; HAR: keeps a promise; NJB: stands by his pledge; LXX: sworn to his neighbor. This is a person who makes a business agreement, and though matters do not turn out as expected, is willing to suffer the loss rather than break the pledge. For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew 5:33-37. 93 Does not loan money on interest: The Law permitted loans with interest to non-Jews but not to Jews.
This goes even further than the Law and forbids it altogether. [Exodus 22:25; Leviticus 25:36; Deuteronomy 23:19] Christians involved in banking ought to pause and think about this. No one who charges interest on a loan will ever reside with God. [For details
see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Luke 6:30-35.] 94 Bribe: It is condemned in the Law. [Exodus 23:8; Deuteronomy
16:19; compare also Proverbs 17:23; 21:14; 29:4] There are subtle ways to bribe a person in authority, such as gifts “without any strings attached.” 95 The person who behaves this way: David has listed about a dozen requirements in order to reside in God’s tent. 96 Never stumble: Or, PBV: never fail; SPR: never be overthrown; NJB: nothing ever shake him; KNX: will stand firm for ever.
