THE PROPHET ISAIAH
CHAPTER ELEVEN:
JUDGE MESSIAH AND SIGN TO REMNANT
Isaiah 11:1-5 – Messiah’s Seven-Fold Spirit
IS11:1 Now a branch will shoot forth
from the
stump of Jesse.
[Romans 15:12] A sprout from his roots will bear fruitage.
| 459 | A branch will shoot forth: That is, the Messiah. Or, KJV: a rod out of; JPS: a shoot shall grow; NJB: a shoot will spring; RHM: come
forth. Note Isaiah 53:2. [Zephaniah 6:12; Revelation 5:5] Here begins a wondrous prophecy regarding the Messiah and the Remnant. |
| 460 |
tump of Jesse: Or, stock of, root, stem. Jesse was the father of David. The phrase is quoted by Paul at Romans 15:12. [1 Samuel 17:58; Matthew 1:6; Luke 3:32; Acts 13:22] |
| 461 | A sprout from his roots will bear fruitage: Or, KJV: a Branch shall grow; JPS: a twig shall sprout; NJB: a new shoot will grow; RHM: a sprout from his roots shall bear fruit; LXX: a blossom
shall come up; TAR: there will go forth a king from the sons of Jesse, and from the sons of his sons the Messiah himself. The latter from the Targum of the Jews proves they understood these verses to apply to Messiah, or Christ. On the Hebrew see notes on Matthew 2:23. [Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12] |
IS11:2 And
the spirit of YeHoWaH will rest upon
[1 Peter 4:14] him – the spirit of
wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and bravery,
the spirit of knowledge and reverent awe
of YeHoWaH.
| 462 | The spirit of YeHoWaH will rest upon: Or, RHM: spirit of Yahweh; JPS: alight upon. Note Isaiah 42:1. [John 1:32; Acts 10:38] |
| 463 | The spirit of: The LXX lists “seven spirits.” See notes on Revelation 1:4. The Hebrew word for the English “spirit”
is RU’ACH. For details on the subject see the book Error of the Trinity. |
| 464 | Wisdom and understanding:
Or, JPS: wisdom and insight. The Messiah is wise and understanding as King and Judge. This wisdom started at an early age. [Luke 2:52] Paul associates Christ with “the wisdom of God.” [1 Corinthians 1:30] The LXX Greek is PNEUMA SOPHIAS. |
| 465 | Counsel and bravery: Or, LXX: counsel and strength [PNEUMA BOULES KAI ISKHOUS]; RHM: counsel and might; NJB: and power; JPS: and valor.
[On “bravery” see Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #1369.] On the thought of “counsel” review Isaiah 9:6. Messiah will counsel humanity on earth. His valor and bravery will cause him to speak courageously without any cowardice. |
| 466 | Knowledge and reverent awe: Or, KJV: fear of; JPS: of devotion and reverence; LXX: godliness. The words “reverent awe” are from the Hebrew YIR’AH [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #3374, fear, terror, awesome, terrifying, respect, piety] and was an attitude Christ possessed with regard to his God and Father. [Hebrews 5:7] The LXX Greek is EUEBEIAS AND OCCURS OFTEN IN THE Christian Scriptures. [See 1 Timothy 3:16.] |
IS11:3 He will find delight in the reverent awe
of YeHoWaH. He will not judge by just what he sees,
nor will he make judgments by only what he hears.
| 467 | Find delight in the reverent awe: That is, the spirit of. Or, LXX: the spirit of the fear of God [PNEUMA PHOBOU]; RHM: find fragrance
in the reverence of [footnote: draw breath]; NJB: his inspiration will lie in fearing Yahweh [footnote: prophetic spirit]; JPS: spirit of devotion and reverence. The believer must imitate Messiah in his/her fear of God. [Proverbs 2:5; 8:13; 2 Corinthians 7:1;
Philippians 2:12] |
| 468 | He will not judge by just what he sees: Or, KJV: after the sight; JPS: what his eyes behold;
NJB: not by appearances. Messiah is the judge appointed by “the Judge of all the earth.” [Genesis 18:25; John 5:22] The Messiah’s judgment will occur in three contexts: a] the parousia-judgment at his Return; b] earth’s inhabitants
during the Thousand Years; and, c] the Last Judgment at the end of the Thousand Years. See God and Judgment. |
IS11:4 He will judge justly
[Revelation 19:11] the poor,
and make equitable decisions on behalf of the oppressed
of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth.
[Revelation 3:27; 12:5; 19:15]
With the spirit of his mouth he will put the lawless person to death.
[2 Thessalonians 2:8]
| 469 | He will judge justly: Or, RHM: he will judge with righteousness; NJB: with integrity; JPS: equity. [Compare Psalm 45:7 with Hebrews
1:9; Proverbs 31:9.] Messiah is a judge. For details see the Biblical Article God and Judgment. |
| 470 | Poor:
Or, lowly. Note Luke 4:18. The poor feature strongly in the ministry of Christ. Research the word “poor” in the Gospels. [Matthew 11:5; 19:21; 26:9, 11; Mark 10:21; 12:42, 43; Luke 6:20; 14:13, 21; 18:22] and the Psalms [23 times]. Compare Psalm
72:4, 12-14. |
| 471 | Make equitable decisions on behalf of the oppressed: Or, KJV: reprove with equity for the meek;
JPS: decide with justice for the lowly; NJB: give fair sentence for the humblest. The poor and oppressed [or, afflicted] are often associated in the Bible. |
| 472 | He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth: Or, LXX: he will smite the earth with the word of his mouth; RHM: sceptre of his mouth. There seems a strong conflate in such verses as 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation
3:27; 12:5; 19:15. Compare the LXX Greek TO LOGO TOU STOMATOS AUTOU with Revelation 19:13, 15 and HO LOGOS… TOU STOMATOS AUTOU. He Hebrew is SHEBET [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #7626, sceptre]. Messiah’s reign includes severe discipline and punishment to those who resist or oppose his kingdom. [Psalm 2:9; 110:2] During the Thousand Years those who sin will have “evil called down upon them.” [Isaiah 65:20] |
| 473 | With the spirit of his mouth he will put the lawless person to death: Or, LXX: with the breath of his lips shall he destroy the ungodly one [EN PNEUMATI DIA KHEILEON ANELEI ASEBE]; RHM: with the breath of his lips will he slay the lawless one; NJB: bring death to the wicked; JPS: slay the wicked with the breath of his lips. The Greek of 2 Thessalonians 2:7, 8 is so close so as not to be ignored: TES ANOMIAS… TO PNEUMATI TOU STOMATOS AUTOU. In Paul’s context this will begin at the parousia-judgment and Return of Christ. Then within the Church Christ will “judge the living and the dead.” [See God and Judgment.] |
IS11:5 He will wear righteousness like a belt,
and faithfulness the sash of his waist. | 474 | He will wear righteousness like a belt: Or, KJV: girdle of his loins; JPS: justice; NJB: uprightness will be the belt around his waist. Note Ephesians 6:14. |
| 475 | Faithfulness the sash of his waist: Or, LXX: his sides clothed with truth; NJB: constancy; JPS: justice. [Psalm 45:4] |
Isaiah 11:6-9 – Peacefulness of Messiah’s Reign
IS11:6 Then the wolf will dwell with the lamb.
The leopard will lie down with the kid, as well as the calf and the young lion together with the well-fed animal. And a little boy will lead them.
| 476 | The wolf will dwell with the lamb: Compare Isaiah 65:25 where the context is the new earth under the New Jerusalem. Some see the language having several applications: a] after the restoration of Israel; b] within the Christian Church; and, c] throughout the earth under the reign of Messiah. The figures of speech may illustrate the change of character among believers. |
| 477 | Little boy will lead them: Or, small child; JPS: herd them. Likely a figure of speech illustrating the general peacefulness under Messiah. |
IS11:7 The cow and the bear will graze together, and their little ones will lie down together. The lion and the ox will eat straw.
| 478 | The lion and the ox will eat straw: Compare Hosea 2:18. |
IS11:8 The
nursing child
will play around
the hole of a cobra.
Yes, over the viper’s den the weaned child will reach out a hand.
| 479 | Nursing child: Or, little child, infant, sucking child, babe. |
| 480 | Will play around: Or, play over, caress over, put his hand. |
| 481 |
Cobra: Or, asp, adder, viper. |
IS11:9 No one will behave harmfully,
nor will anyone destroy, in all My Holy Mountain.
For all the earth will be filled with the knowledge
of YeHoWaH just like waters covering the oceans.| 482 | No one will behave harmfully: Or, JPS: nothing evil
or vile; NJB: no hurt, no harm. See elsewhere in Isaiah 2:4; 35:9; 60:18. On “harmful” see Mark 7:21 and 1 Corinthians in Nazarene Commentary 2000©. |
| 483 | Holy Mountain: That is, New Jerusalem. A major application is to the final state of the Christian Church. Compare Isaiah 2:4; 65:25. [Revelation 21:1-4] |
| 484 | Filled with the knowledge: Or, LXX: whole world; NJB: full of knowledge; JPS: filled with devotion to the LORD. See notes on Psalm 22:27 and Habakkuk 2:14 in Nazarene Commentary 2000©. |
Isaiah 11:10-12 – A Sign to Gather the Scattered
IS11:10 It will occur in that Day that a root of Jesse will appear as a sign to the peoples and to him the nations will search.
[Matthew 24:30; Romans 15:12] His place of rest will be glorious.
| 485 | Root of Jesse: The verse is quoted by Paul at Romans 15:12 though from the LXX. See below. |
| 486 | Will appear: Or, KJV: shall stand; JPS: remained standing; NJB: standing. The LXX reads: “And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall arise to rule over the Gentiles.” The Hebrew for “appear” [or, stand up] is `AMAD [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #5975, arise, appear, come on the scene] and is so rendered “appear” at Daniel 12:1 with regard to Michael by the Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh. See notes on Daniel 12:1 in the book Nazarene Apocalypse 2000©. It is possible this and the related verses below are the source for the Nazarene’s words at Matthew 24:30, 31. |
| 487 | Sign: Or, RHM: ensign; NJB: signal. The Hebrew is NEC [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #5251, standard, sign]. See SEMEION [sign] at Matthew 24:30. |
| 488 | The nations will search: Or, LXX: in him shall the Gentiles trust; NJB: sought out by; RHM: seek; JPS: seek his counsel. [Romans 15:12; Acts 28:28] |
| 489 | His place of rest will be glorious: Or, KJV: his rest; JPS: his abode shall be honored; NJB: its home will be glorious. Christ and his Church will descend as the New Jerusalem to the earth where peace will reign. |
IS11:11 It will occur in that Day that the Sovereign Lord will again a second time
reach out His hand to repossess the remnant of His people. [Including] those who survive from
Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Ethiopia, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath and from the coastal towns and islands of the sea.
| 490 | Again a second time: Possibly in contrast to the rescue out of Egypt, though some would see an application to the Church.[Leviticus
26:42; Deuteronomy 4:31] |
| 491 | Those who survive from: Some of the countries where the remnant are scattered are
named. |
IS11:12 He
will raise a sign to the nations and will gather the lost of Israel, and collect the scattered of Judah – from the four corners of the earth.
[Matthew 24:31]| 492 | He will raise a sign: Or, signal, standard, banner. The whole verse seems a source for the Nazarene Master’s
words at Matthew 24:30, 31. |
| 493 | Gather the lost: Or, NJB: assembly the outcasts; JPS: assemble the dispersed.
[Ezra 1:3; Isaiah 49:22; 62:10; 2 Thessalonians 2:1] |
| 494 | Four corners of the earth: Compare Matthew 24:31; Revelation
7:1. |
Isaiah 11:13-16 – A Highway for the Remnant
IS11:13 The envy of Ephraim will be taken away, and the enmity of Judah
will be cut off. Ephraim will not envy Judah, and Judah will not irritate Ephraim.
| 495 | Ephraim… Judah: The ten-tribe northern kingdom of Israel and the two-tribe southern kingdom of Judah will put to rest their
long enmity. [See Ezekiel 37:15-20.] There would be a preliminary application to the united tribes returning from exile, and likely a parallel with Ephesians chapter 2. |
IS11:14 They will jump on the back of the Philistines westward,
and together they will plunder the peoples of the East. They will lay hold on Edom and Moab, with the children of Ammon their subjects.
| 496 | Philistines westward: Nations surrounding Israel are listed. The same generally exist today around the State of Israel. |
IS11:15 Then YeHoWaH will desolate the Egyptian delta, and He will raise His hand against the [Euphrates] river with the full force of His spirit. He will strike the seven streams so
they can walk across in their sandals.
IS11:16 Thus there will be a highway for the remnant of His people
who have survived out of Assyria. It will be exactly as it was for Israel in that day they came out of the land of Egypt. | 497 | Highway for the remnant of His people: Compare Isaiah 19:23; 35:8-10; 40:3; 57:14; 62:10. |
| 498 | Came out of the land of Egypt: That is, the first time God reached out His hand as mentioned above. [Exodus chapter 12] |
