THE PROPHET ISAIAH
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO:
PEACE UNDER A KING AND HIS PRINCES
Summary
Blessings existing during the reign of a king and his princes are described. Those who will no longer exist are also described. There is a warning to comfortable, leisure-loving women. As a result of the outpouring of God’s Spirit righteousness and
peace prevail.
Isaiah 32:1-8 – Blessings under a Righteous King
IS32:1 Behold! A king will govern justly!
Yes, princes will rule impartially.
| 1331 | A king will govern justly: Or, RHM: in righteousness shall reign a king; NJB: a king wo reigns uprightly; LXX: a righteous king
shall reign. That is, the Messiah. [Genesis 49:10; Psalm 2:6; 45:6; 72:1, 8; Luke 1:32; John 1:49] Jesus the Nazarene began to reign over his realm upon his return to heaven. [Daniel 7:13; Ephesians 1:19-21] For details see the book Nazarene Principles 2000©.] Return to Isaiah 11:1-5. Messiah’s reign will enter a new phase upon his Return. [Revelation 11:15, 17, 18] |
| 1332 | Princes will rule impartially: Or, RHM: with equity; NJB: fair judgment; BAS: chiefs will give right decisions; DAR: princes shall rule in judgment; JPS: rule in justice; LXX: princes [ARCHONTES] shall govern with judgement [KRISEOS]. See similar language at Psalm 45:16. Though some would apply the words to the Messiah’s millennial reign, it seems more likely the words apply to the beginning of the Christian Church. [Colossians 1:13] See notes on Revelation 1:5, 6; 5:10. The Hebrew for “princes” is SAR [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #8269, prince, ruler, leader, chief, chieftain, official, captain… overseer… elder] and would describe appointed men within the Church. [1 Timothy 3:1; Titus 1:5] |
IS32:2 Each one will become a shelter from the wind
– a protection from the storm.
They will be just like canals of water in a wasteland
– like the shade of a crag in an exhausted land.
| 1333 | Each one will become a shelter from the wind: Or, BAS: a man will be as a safe place from the wind; DAR: a hiding-place from the
wind. Here the word “wind” is from the Hebrew RU’ACH. On “wind” compare Ephesians 4:14, 15. |
| 1334 |
A protection from the storm: Or, DAR: a covert from the storm. Return to Isaiah 4:6. Compare Jude 12, 13 as dangers within the Church. Elders are a source of protection to the flock. |
| 1335 | They will be just like canals of water in a wasteland: Or, BAS: as rivers of water in a dry place; DAR: brooks of water in a dry place; JPS: by the watercourses in a dry place. [See Isaiah
35:6.] Elders are a source of spiritual water as preachers and teachers. |
| 1336 | Like the shade of a crag in an exhausted
land: Or, BAS: as the shade of a great rock in a waste land; DAR: the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land; JPS: in the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Elders are a source of relief to the flock. |
IS32:3 Then the eyes of visionaries will not be shut,
and the ears of those willing to hear will listen.
| 1337 | Then the eyes of visionaries will not be shut: Or, BAS: the eyes of those who see will not be shut; DAR: the eyes of them that
see shall not be dim; RHM: who are ready to see; NJB: seers. Return to Isaiah 29:10; 30:10. |
| 1338 | The ears of those
willing to hear will listen: Or, BAS: those who have hearing will give ear to the word; LXX: they shall incline their ears to hear. Return to Isaiah 6:9 and compare Matthew 13:11. |
IS32:4 The
heart of those too busy will stop to pay attention to knowledge,
and the tongue of the inarticulate will be quick to speak clearly.
| 1339 | The heart of those too busy will stop to pay attention to knowledge: Or, BAS: The man of sudden impulses will become wise in heart;
DAR: the heart of the rash shall understand knowledge; LXX: the heart of the weak ones shall attend to hear; RHM: the hurried; NJB: the heart of the hasty will learn to think things over. [Isaiah 29:24] |
| 1340 | The tongue of the inarticulate will be quick to speak clearly: Or, BAS: and he whose tongue is slow will get the power of talking clearly; DAR: the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly; LXX: the stammering tongues shall soon learn to speak peace. Compare Isaiah 35:6. [Luke 21:15; Acts 4:13] |
IS32:5 No longer will a stupid person be called noble,
nor a scoundrel called generous.
| 1341 | No longer will a stupid person be called noble: Or, BAS: The foolish man will no longer be named noble; DAR: vile man shall be
no more called noble; JPS: vile person shall be no more called liberal; LXX: they shall no more at all tell a fool [MORO(n)] to rule. |
| 1342 |
Nor a scoundrel called generous: Or, BAS: they will not say of the false man that he is a man of honour; DAR: the churl said to be bountiful. Return to Isaiah 5:20. |
IS32:6 For the stupid
person will speak stupidly
– the heart habitually immoral – habitually irreverent
– speaking in opposition to YeHoWaH that which is misleading.
Such a person causes the hungry soul to feel empty,
and the thirsty person to feel parched.
| 1343 | For the stupid person will speak stupidly: Or, BAS: the foolish man will say foolish things; DAR: for the vile man will speak villainy; LXX: the fool shall speak foolish words. A person is always identified by the subject and language coming out of the mouth. See notes on Matthew 12:34. |
| 1344 | The heart habitually immoral – habitually irreverent: Or, BAS: having evil thoughts in his heart, working what is unclean; DAR: his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy; JPS: his heart will work iniquity, to practise ungodliness; LXX: his heart shall meditate vanities, and to perform lawless deeds. [1 Samuel 24:13; Micah 2:1] See First John on the subject of habitual sin, or the practice thereof. |
| 1345 | Speaking in opposition to YeHoWaH that which is misleading: Or, BAS: talking falsely about the Lord; DAR: utter error against Jehovah; JPS: to utter wickedness against the LORD; LXX: speak error. See notes on 2 Thessalonians 2:3-10. |
| 1346 | Such a person causes the hungry soul to feel empty: Or, BAS: to keep food from him who is in need of it; DAR: to make empty the soul of the hungry; LXX: to scatter hungry souls [PSYCHAS]. The person described is also a selfish materialist. Compare notes on James 2:16 and 1 John 3:17. |
IS32:7 For a certainty the stupid person’s weapons are harmful,
devising notorious schemes.
They ruin the oppressed with false messages,
even the needy who pleads for justice.
| 1347 | For a certainty the stupid person’s weapons are harmful: Or, BAS: The designs of the false are evil; DAR: The instruments
also of the churl are evil; LXX: the counsel of the wicked will devise iniquity. [je 5:26; Micah 7:3] |
| 1348 | Devising
notorious schemes: Or, BAS: purposing the destruction of the poor man by false words; LXX: to destroy the poor with unjust words. [Psalm 10:7; 2 Peter 2:2] |
| 1349 | They ruin the oppressed with false messages: Or, LXX: to destroy the poor with unjust words. |
IS32:8 However, the noble person devises noble things, taking a stand on noble things. | 1350 | The noble person devises noble things, taking a stand on noble things: Or, BAS: the noble-hearted man has noble purposes, and by these he will be guided; JPS: the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand; LXX: the godly [EUSEBEIS] have devised wise measures, and this counsel shall stand. Clearly these would be among the “princes” of verse 1. |
Isaiah 32:9-11 – A Warning to Women
IS32:9 [YeHoWaH says:] “Arise, all you women in your leisure,
and hear My voice. You over-confident daughters,
give ear to My message.
| 1351 | Arise, all you women in your leisure: Or, BAS: Give ear to my voice, you women who are living in comfort; DAR: women that are at ease; LXX: rich women. Having discussed the men, now the female believers in Judah come under God’s attention. Return to Isaiah 3:16. Note the Mosaic Curse at Deuteronomy 28:56. For more details regarding female worshippers of YHWH see the Biblical Article The Biblical Woman. |
| 1352 | Over-confident daughters: Or, BAS: daughters who have no fear of danger; DAR: careless daughters. It is a sad fact that these words apply also to modern Christian women. |
IS32:10 In a little more than a year all of you over-confident women will be distraught.
For the grape harvest is over and there is no gathering of its produce.
| 1353 | Distraught: Or, troubled, agitated, tremble. Return to Isaiah 3:17. [Jeremiah 25:10] |
IS32:11 Shudder, all you comfortable women!
Be troubled, all you over-confident daughters!
Strip yourselves naked and cover your thighs in sackcloth!
| 1354 | Shudder, all you comfortable women: Or, BAS: Be shaking with fear, you women who are living in comfort; DAR: Tremble, ye women
that are at ease; LXX: Be amazed, be pained, ye confident ones. |
| 1355 | Be troubled, all you over-confident daughters:
Or, BAS: be troubled, you who have no fear of danger. |
| 1356 | Strip yourselves naked and cover your thighs in sackcloth:
Or, BAS: take off your robes and put on clothing of grief; LXX: strip you, bare yourselves, gird your loins. Return to Isaiah 3:24. |
IS32:12 Keep beating your breasts over your pleasurable
gardens,
over your fruitful vineyard.
| 1357 | Keep beating your breasts over your pleasurable gardens: Or, BAS: Have sorrow for the fields, the pleasing fields; |
IS32:13 For the soil of My people will grow only thorns and cactus,
for a certainty they will cover joyful houses throughout a jubilant city!
| 1358 | For the soil of My people will grow only thorns and cactus: Or, BAS: the land of my people, where thorns will come up; DAR: thistles
and briars. Return to Isaiah 5:6. |
IS32:14 For the palace is deserted! The city’s excitement has stopped. Fortress
and watchtower serve as caves, always filled with the joy of wild-asses, droves of them in the fields.| 1359 | Fortress: Or, Ophel. |
Isaiah 32:15-20 – Peace with Righteousness
IS32:15 “And this until the
Spirit is poured out on us
from above.
[Acts 10:45] Then the desert will become an orchard, an the orchard will be considered a forest.
| 1360 | Until the Spirit is poured out on us from above: That is, Pneuma. Or, BAS: Till the spirit comes on us from on high; LXX: until
the Spirit [PNEUMA] shall come upon you from on high. The phrase is echoed in the Christian Scriptures. [Acts 10:45] Compare Isaiah 44:3. |
| 1361 |
Forest: Return to Isaiah 29:17. [Isaiah 35:2] |
IS32:16 Then justice will dwell in the desert, and righteousness will reside in the orchard.
| 1362 | Then justice will dwell in the desert, and righteousness will reside in the orchard: Or, BAS: Then in the waste land there will
be an upright rule, and righteousness will have its place in the fertile field; DAR: judgment shall inhabit the wilderness, and righteousness dwell in the fruitful field; LXX: righteousness shall dwell in Carmel. [Isaiah 42:6; 60:12] |
IS32:17 Righteousness will produce peaceful harmony,
and the product of righteousness [will always include] quiet tranquility and confident security.
| 1363 | Righteousness will produce peaceful harmony: Or, BAS: And the work of righteousness will be peace. Compare Romans 14:17. Peace
can only exist where righteousness is the norm. See notes on James 3:17, 18. |
| 1364 | The product of righteousness [will always include] quiet tranquility and confident security: Or, BAS: And the work of righteousness will be peace; and the effect of an upright rule will be to take away fear for ever; DAR: quietness and assurance for ever; LXX: righteousness shall ensure rest, and the righteous shall be confident for ever [AIONOS]. [Ezekiel 37:26; Micah 4:3] |
IS32:18 And My people will dwell in peaceful homes, in secure residences, in comfortable places of rest.
| 1365 | My people will dwell in peaceful homes, in secure residences, in comfortable places of rest: Or, BAS: my people will be living
in peace, in houses where there is no fear, and in quiet resting-places; LXX: And his people shall inhabit a city of peace, and dwell in it in confidence, and they shall rest with wealth. [Isaiah 60:18; 65:22] |
IS32:19 However, it will hail when the forest collapses, and the city will sink into a sink-hole.
| 1366 | However, it will hail when the forest collapses, and the city will sink into a sink-hole: Or, BAS: But the tall trees will come
down with a great fall, and the town will be low in a low place; JPS: it shall hail, in the downfall of the forest; but the city shall descend into the valley. That is, before the blessings described above will occur the city of Jerusalem must experience desolation.
Return to Isaiah 26:5. |
IS32:20 Blessed with divine favor
are those sowing near water, those who send forth the feet of the bull and donkeys.| 1367 | Blessed with divine favor: Or, happy, blessed. |
