89 From the south The God comes, and the Holy One from Mount Paran: Or, BAS: God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran; LXX: and the Holy One [HO HAGIOS] from the dark shady mount Pharan; NJB: Eloah comes from Teman. The Hebrew word for “God” here is the singular ‘ELOWAHH. [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #433] The LXX Greek is HO THEOS [that is, The God]. The word “south” is from the Hebrew TEYMAN, meaning “south.” Some believe the imagery describes YHWH leading His people from the south past Edom toward restoration in the Holy Land. [Genesis 36:34; Jeremiah 49:7, 20; Ezekiel 25:13; Amos 1:11, 12; Obadiah 9] Paran is the place name for much of the wilderness in which the Israelites wandered as nomads for forty years.

Habakkuk 3:3b-7 – YeHoWaH Described

HA3:3b His splendor covers the Celestialum, and His praise fills the earth. 91
91 His splendor covers the Celestialum, and His praise fills the earth: Or, BAS: The heavens were covered with his glory, and the earth was full of his praise; LXX: His excellence covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. The words may describe YHWH at Mount Sinai. [Exodus 19:16; Hebrews 12:18]

92 His light shines with brilliance: Or, BAS: He was shining like the light; JPS: a brightness [NOGAHH] appeareth as the light; LXX: his brightness shall be as light [PHOS]. The Hebrew borrows from a root meaning to shine or enlighten. [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #5050] [Exodus 13:21]
93 From His hands He has brilliant flashes of sunlight: Or, BAS: he had rays coming out from his hand. The Hebrew uses QEREN which literally means “horns.” Compare Exodus 34:29, 30, 35.
94 In this is His power concealed: Or, BAS: there his power was kept secret; JPS: there is the hiding of His power ‘OZ]; LXX: and he caused a mighty love [AGAPESIN] of his strength; NJB: this is where his power lies hidden; TAN: therein His glory is enveloped [footnote: Hebrew uncertain]; RHM: there is the hiding of his power [footnote: veil, envelop]. The LXX Greek reads radically different from the uncertain Hebrew, using AGAPESIN [or, love, compassionate affection, benevolent empathy]. [Psalm 68:34]
HA3:5 Pestilence proceeds before Him, 95 and burning fever goes forth at His feet. 96

[Psalm 28:8] “Anointed” is poetically paralleled with “Your people.” The inference is here that God’s People are called His “anointed’ or “Christ.” [See notes on the name “Christian” at Acts 11:26.

Habakkuk 3:16-19 – Fear and Faith

HA3:16 I heard and trembled deep within. 113 The sound made my lips quiver. 114 My bones were restless. My limbs shook uncontrollably. 115 Yet I wait calmly for the day of distress, when the invader arrives upon the people. 116

Note the reaction of others under inspiration. [Psalm 119:120; Jeremiah 23:9; Daniel 8:27]
116 Yet I wait calmly for the day of distress, when the invader arrives upon the people: Or, BAS: I gave sounds of grief in the day of trouble, when his forces came up against the people in bands; JPS: that I should wait for the day of trouble, when he cometh up against the people that he invadeth; LXX: I will rest in the day of affliction [EN HEMERA THYLIPSEOS], from going up to the people of my sojourning. [Psalm 42:5; Lamentations 3:26] The prophet’s answer to his prayer comes as inspired advice to “wait” patiently for the “day of oppression.” Compare the Greek THYLIPSEOS at Matthew 24:21.
HA3:17 Though the fig-tree never blossom, 117 and the vines never sprout, and the olive tree fail, and the fields become unproductive, and the flocks escape the pen, and the herd is gone from the stalls –

HA3:19 YeHoWaH my Sovereign Lord is my power, 120 so He has made my feet like a deer’s, and on the heights He will cause me tread.
120 YeHoWaH my Sovereign Lord is my power: Or, BAS: The Lord God is my strength; JPS: God, the Lord [YHWH], is my strength; LXX: The Lord God [KYRIOS HO THEOS] is my strength [DYNAMIS]. The Greek structure would argue that a name must appear where KYRIOS occurs. It is thought by some that the original LXX contained YHWH in Hebrew amidst the Greek text.
