THE GOSPEL OF MARK

CHAPTER FIVE:
A DEMON EXORCISED, A WOMAN HEALED,
AND A DEAD GIRL RAISED

[“Crowds Follow Miracle-Worker”]

Mark 5:1-10 – Demon ‘Legion’ Expelled

|| Matthew 8:28-34; 77 Luke 8:26-39
77 Matthew 8:28-34: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:1 Now when they arrived on the other side of the sea they beached in the land of the Gadarenes. 78
78 Gadarenes: Some manuscripts have “Gerasenes.” Possibly an area out of Gerasa.
MK5:2 And when Jesus stepped ashore instantly a man with an unclean demon approached him from among the graves. MK5:3 [This person] was living among the tombs and no one had been able to bind him, even with chains. MK5:4 For though he had been bound with shackles on hands and feet, he would snap the chains and break them to pieces. Nor could any one ever control him. MK5:5 He always stayed in the mountains and among the tombs day and night, shrieking and cutting himself with sharp stones. MK5:6 However, when he saw Jesus in the distance he ran up to him and fell at his feet. 79
79 Fell at his feet: Some versions say “worshipped” but the Greek is PROSEKYNESEN [bow + kiss] and means a respectful prostration. Whether is actions was generated by the poor man himself, or the demons within is not clear.
MK5:7 And then he screamed at the top of his voice: “What is there between you and me, Jesus, 80 you Son of the Most High God? 81 I beg you before the God 82 not to torment me!” 83
80 What is there between you and me, Jesus: A statement of repellency suggesting there is no relationship between the two. It is likely the demons speak. Compare notes on this phrase in John 2:4. The man would not know who Jesus was but those who inhabit him do.
81 Son of the Most High God: Possibly a reference to their knowledge of Christ’s pre-existence among the sons of God. [Job 38:7; Proverbs 8:22-30] For details on the pre-existence of Christ compare notes on John 17:5. The demons do not call Jesus “God.”
82 The God: TON THEON as in John 1:1b.
83 Torment me: The English conveys a different idea than the original which has the idea of imprisonment or punishment. The other accounts mention the “abyss.” [Revelation 20:3]
MK5:8 Then Jesus said to him: “You unclean demon, come out of this man!” MK5:9 Then Jesus asked him: “What is your name?” And he answered: “Legion, 84 because there are many of us!”
84 Legion: Or, 6,000!
MK5:10 And the man kept begging Jesus again and again that he would not expel them from this country [of the Gadarenes].

Mark 5:11-17 – Swine Rush Over Cliff

|| Matthew 8:28-34 85
85 Matthew 8:28-34: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:11 Now nearby were some hills where a large herd of pigs 86 were feeding.
86 Pigs: This was forbidden Jews. [Leviticus 11:7; Deuteronomy 14:8]
MK5:12 So all the demons begged Jesus, saying: “Send us away into the pigs, so that we may enter them!” MK5:13 Right away Jesus gave them permission and the unclean demons came out and entered into the pigs. 87 Then the whole herd of two thousand rushed fiercely down the hills over a cliff into the sea and drowned.
87 Entered into the pigs: If there were 6,000 demons in the man and they all went into the 2,000 pigs then each pig had three demons. It seems the demons had evil motives, and also were trapped to material forms whether human or animal. However, Jesus accomplished tow things: a] he destroys the product of unlawful activity; and, b] releases the demons from material possession, something they did not want.
MK5:14 Now those herding the pigs went and told the local village as well as the nearby country. So people came out to see what had happened. MK5:15 When they approached Jesus, the man who had been possessed by the demons named Legion, that man was sitting there clothed and sound in mind. 88 All the people were astonished. 89
88 Sound in mind: Or, in his right mind, sane mind, perfectly sane.
89 Astonished: Or, awestruck, frightened. Though they may have feared the demonized man, they feared this power even more.
MK5:16 Those who had witnessed the matter told them all how it happened to the man who was possessed by demons, and also about the herd of pigs. MK5:17 Now these local people began to beg Jesus leave their coastal area. 90
90 Beg Jesus leave their coastal area: Perhaps they were involved in other unlawful produce and feared the ruin of their commercial business.

Mark 5:18-20 – Healed Demoniac Proclaims Jesus

|| Matthew 8:28-34 91
91 Matthew 8:28-34: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:18 Now when Jesus was boarding the fishing boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged Jesus that he might associate with him. MK5:19 However, Jesus would not permit it, but said to him: “Go home to your own people and tell them what wonderful things the Lord has done for you.” MK5:20 So the man left and began to proclaim in the Decapolis 92 what marvelous things Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
92 Decapolis: Ten Cities.

Mark 5:21-24 – A Synagogue Ruler

|| Matthew 9:18-26; 93 Luke 8:40-56
93 Matthew 9:18-26: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:21 Now when Jesus crossed the sea to the other side, a large crowd of people gathered around him near the shore. MK5:22 But, look, one of the leaders of the synagogue, 94 Jairus by name, approached and when he saw Jesus he bowed at his feet.
94 Leaders of the synagogue: Or, synagogue chiefs, rulers. The Greek is one word, ARCHI-SYNAGOGON [ruler + synagogue]. It refers to president or presiding officer [elder] of the synagogue. The Christian congregations would have something similar.
MK5:23 Jairus began earnestly begging him: “My little daughter lies near death! I beg you, come and lay your hands upon her that she may be healed, and then she will live!” MK5:24 So Jesus left with him and a large crowd of people thronged after him.

Mark 5:25-29 – A Medical Miracle

|| Matthew 9:18-26 95
95 Matthew 9:18-26: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:25 Now [in the crowd] there was a certain woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. MK5:26 She had suffered many things at the hands of numerous physicians. 96 She had spent all of her money and was no better but actually worse. 97
96 Physicians: Or, healers, doctors.
97 Spent all of her money and was no better but actually worse: One can read this and marvel that 2000 years later matters have no changed.
MK5:27 When she had heard of Jesus, she approached him from behind in the crowd and touched his garment. MK5:28 For she had told herself: “If I just touch his garment 98 I will be cured.”
98 Touch his garment: This was against the Law of Moses and would have rendered Jesus ceremonially unclean. [Leviticus 6:27; 15:25]
MK5:29 And instantly her constant bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible affliction.

Mark 5:30-34 – Be in Good Health

|| Matthew 9:18-26 99
99 Matthew 9:18-26: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:30 Now Jesus instantly realized that some power had gone out of him, 100 so he turned around in the crowd and asked: “Who touched my clothing?”
100 Some power had gone out of him: Or, KJV: virtue; GDS: healing power had passed from him.
MK5:31 His disciples said to him: “You can see the crowd pressing in from every side. Why do you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” MK5:32 But, looking over the crowd Jesus saw the woman who had done this. MK5:33 But, the woman was frightened and shaking because she knew what had happened. 101 So she came and fell down before him and began to tell him the whole truth.
101 She knew what had happened: She was aware she had violated the Law of Moses and was frightened at the consequence.
MK5:34 Then Jesus said to her: “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and continue cured of your affliction.”

Mark 5:35-37 – Your Daughter Died

|| Matthew 9:18-26 102
102 Matthew 9:18-26: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:35 While Jesus was still speaking someone from the synagogue leader’s house arrived with the news: “Your daughter is dead! Why trouble the teacher any further?” MK5:36 Now as soon as Jesus heard the message he said to the synagogue leader: “Have no fear, just believe!” MK5:37 Then Jesus did not permit anyone else to follow after him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.

Mark 5:38-43 – Little Girl, Rise

|| Matthew 9:18-26 103
103 Matthew 9:18-26: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

MK5:38 Now Jesus arrived at the house of the synagogue leader and saw all the confusion of all those weeping and wailing. MK5:39 So when he entered he told them all: “Why so much noisy commotion and weeping? The little girl is not dead but sleeping.” MK5:40 And they all laughed scornfully at him. However, when Jesus had them all put outside, he took the father and mother of the young girl and with them and his disciples entered the room where the young girl was lying. MK5:41 Then Jesus took the young girl by her hand 104 and said to her: “Talitha cumi!” 105 (which when translated means, “Little girl I tell you to get up.”)
104 Jesus took the young girl by her hand: The touching of a dead body made the offender ceremonially unclean under the Law of Moses. [Leviticus 21:11; 22:4; Numbers 6:6, 11]
105 Talitha cumi: Hebrew [or, Aramaic], the native tongue of Jesus. Mark writes to Romans who read and speak Greek and Latin.
MK5:42 Instantly the little girl rose and walked about, for she was twelve years of age. Now everyone was awe-struck with great amazement. MK5:43 Then Jesus strictly charged them not to tell anyone about what had happened, and also commanded that she should be given something to eat.
