THE GOSPEL OF MARK
[“Faith, Robbers, and Authority”]
|| Matthew 21:1-11;284
Luke 19:28-38; John 12:12-16284 Matthew 21:1-11: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
MK11:1 Now they came close to Jerusalem, arriving at Bethphage and Bethany not too far from the Mount of Olives. There Jesus sent forward two of his disciples. MK11:2 He told them: “Go your way into that village ahead. As soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tethered on which no person has ever ridden. MK11:3 And if anybody asks you, ‘What are you doing?’ just tell them the Lord needs it, and right away return here.” MK11:4 Then they went their way and found the colt tethered outside a door in the street, and they untied it. MK11:5 Now certain people standing around asked them: “Why are you untying the colt?” MK11:6 So they said exactly what Jesus commanded them and the people let them go.
MK11:7
They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it and Jesus sat on the colt.
MK11:8
Others spread their garments on the road and still others cut down tree branches and spread them in the path.
MK11:9
Now those in front and those behind all kept crying aloud: “Hosanna!285
Blessed is he coming in the YHWH’s name!
[Psalm 118:25, 26]
MK11:10 Blessed be the kingdom of our forefather David286
coming in YHWH’s287
name! Hosanna in the highest!”
285 Hosanna: Or, Save we pray, God bless him. The crowd quotes Psalm 118:25, 26 in their proclamation. 286 Kingdom of our forefather David: Compare 2 Samuel 7:6. The whole scene is in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 though Mark does not go
into detail here with his Roman audience.
MK11:11
Then Jesus entered into Jerusalem and the Temple courtyard,288
and after he examined the whole view, since it was near night-time, he went his way into Bethany with the Twelve.287 YHWH: The language is borrowed from Psalm 118 where the Divine Name occurs in the Hebrew Text. The Greek here may suggest YHWH originally belong here. 288 Temple courtyard:
The Greek is HIERON and is the word used for the entire temple compound with its various courtyards. The word for the temple proper is NAOS.
|| Matthew 21:18, 19289289 Matthew 21:18, 19: Or, For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
MK11:12
Now the next day as they were all leaving Bethany Jesus was hungry.290
MK11:13
Seeing a fig tree in the distance he approached it thinking he would find some fruit on it.291
But when he got there he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season of figs.292
290 Hungry: How could God ever be “hungry”? 291 Thinking he would find some fruit on it: God would know whether it had fruit or not.
MK11:14
So Jesus responded and said to the tree:
“May no one ever eat fruit from you!”
292 Season of figs: God would be quite aware of what season it was.
|| Matthew 21:12, 13, 17;293
Luke 19:45-48293 Matthew 21:12, 13, 17: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
MK11:15
Now when they arrived in Jerusalem Jesus went into the Temple courtyard. He started throwing out those who bought and sold in the Temple courtyard. He upset the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves.
MK11:16
And Jesus would not allow any person to carry a vessel across the Temple courtyard.
MK11:17
Then he began to teach,294
telling them:
“Is it not written:
‘My House will be called a House of Prayer among all the non-Jews’?
[Isaiah 56:7] But you have made it a
den of robbers!”
[Jeremiah 7:11]
MK11:18
Now when the Bible Copyists and chief priests heard this they began to seek a way to destroy Jesus.
294 He began to teach: In his teaching Jesus refers to Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11.
|| Matthew 21:20-22295295 Matthew 21:20-22: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
MK11:19
Now while it was still dark Jesus left the city.
MK11:20
In the morning as they traveled they saw the fig tree had completely dried up, including its roots.
MK11:21
Then Peter began to remember296
and said to Jesus: “Rabbi, look, the fig tree you cursed is completely withered!”
MK11:22
Jesus responded and said to them:
“Continue to believe in God!
MK11:23
For I tell you this truth: Whoever tell this mountain,297 ‘Rise
and throw yourself into the sea’ – not doubting in the heart at all – but firmly believing that whatever is said will occur – such will see its fulfillment no matter what was asked.
296 Peter began to remember: The whole lesson has been one of faith as well as an analogy of Israel’s barren condition regarding
the Messiah.
MK11:24 This is the reason I tell you: whatever you ask in prayer – believing you will receive it – you will receive
it.
MK11:25 So whenever you stand up to pray, first forgive anyone who has harmed you,298 then your heavenly Father will also forgive you your missteps.
297 Whoever tell this mountain: Jesus uses a hyperbole as an absurdum. A “mountain” may represent a great, nearly impossible
obstacle to over come. [Zechariah 4:7]
MK11:26 [[However, if you do not forgive, neither will your heavenly Father forgive your missteps.]]”299298 Forgive anyone who has harmed you: Or, KNX: forgive whatever wrong any man has done you; PME: you must forgive anything that you are holding against anyone else. It is possible Jesus says this here – though he has said it much earlier in his ministry – because of conflicts among the apostles themselves. He appeals to his apostles to always begin their prayers with forgiveness of others. 299 Bracketed words are recognized as not adequately supported.
|| Matthew 21:23-27;300
Luke 20:1-8300 Matthew 21:23-27: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
MK11:27 So now they returned to Jerusalem again and as he was walking in the Temple courtyard the chief priests, Bible Copyists and Jewish elders approached him. MK11:28 They asked Jesus: “By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority to do them?” MK11:29 Now Jesus answered them: “Let me ask you one question – and you give me the answer – then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. MK11:30 Was the baptism of John from Heaven or a human source? Tell me.” MK11:31 Then they began to debate among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say: ‘Why then did you not believe?’ MK11:32 On the other hand, if we say, ‘From humans’” – well, now then they feared the people, for they all considered John a prophet for sure. MK11:33 So they answered and said: “We do not know.” Jesus responded to them: “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do all these things.”
