THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

CHAPTER NINE:
TEACHING, FORMING THE TWELVE AND
THE TRANSFIGURATION

[“Who Is This?”]
Key word: Followers

Luke 9:1-6 – Twelve Sent Out to Preach

|| Matthew 10:1, 5, 8, 9-14; 349 Mark 6:7-13 350
349 Matthew 10:1, 5, 8, 9-14: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
350 Mark 6:7-13: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:1 Now Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. LK9:2 Then he sent them out to preach about God’s Realm and to heal the sick. LK9:3 And he said to them: “Take nothing for the trip 351 – not a staff, nor pouch, bread, silver money, not even two under garments.
351 Take nothing for the trip: What Jesus instructs his apostles are not directions for later disciples, but a lesson to them about relying on God. However, basic principles can be drawn and applied to modern evangelists and missionaries.
LK9:4 Now whatever house you may enter, remain there and go out from there. LK9:5 And whoever does not receive you when you leave that village, shake the dust off your feet as a witness against them.” LK9:6 Then the apostles left and went throughout the villages preaching the Good News and healing everywhere.

Luke 9:7-9 – Who Is This?

|| Matthew 14:1, 2; 352 Mark 6:14-16 353
352 Matthew 14:1, 2: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
353 Mark 6:14-16: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:7 Now when Herod 354 the tetrarch heard how all these things were taking place he was perplexed because some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.
354 Herod: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew 14:1; Mark 6:14, 22, 25-27. [Also the book of Acts.]
LK9:8 Also, others were saying that Elijah had appeared, while still others that some ancient prophet had arisen. LK9:9 So Herod said: “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this person about whom I hear such things?” Now he continued to try and find Jesus.

Luke 9:10-17 – 5,000 Fed

|| Matthew 14:13-21; 355 Mark 6:30-44; 356 John 6:1-13 357
355 Matthew 14:13-21: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
356 Mark 6:30-44: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.
357 John 6:1-13: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on John.

LK9:10 Now when the apostles returned they told Jesus all the things they did. Then Jesus took them and withdrew privately to a village called Bethsaida. LK9:11 However, the crowds became aware of this and followed them. After Jesus welcomed them he began to tell them about God’s Realm, and those in need of healing he cured. LK9:12 When evening drew near the twelve approached Jesus and said to him: “Because this is such an isolated place, send the crowd away so they may leave and find lodging and provisions in the surrounding villages and farms.” LK9:13 Jesus told them: “You give them something to eat.” But, the apostles responded: “We have no more than five loaves of bread and two fish, unless we leave and buy food for all these people.” LK9:14 (For there were about five-thousand men.) However, Jesus told his disciples: “Have them all sit down in groups of about fifty each.” LK9:15 So they did as he said and reclined. LK9:16 Then taking the five loaves of bread and the two fish, Jesus looked up into the sky and blessed them. Then he continued breaking the loaves and gave these to the disciples to dispense to the crowd. LK9:17 So they all ate and were satisfied, and when they gathered up all the leftovers the fragments filled twelve baskets.

Luke 9:18-22 – Who Do You Say I Am?

|| Matthew 16:13-21; 358 Mark 8:27-31 359
358 Matthew 16:13-21: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
359 Mark 8:27-31: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:18 Later Jesus was praying alone though his disciples were with him. He asked them: “Who does the crowd think me to be?” LK9:19 Then they answered: “John the Baptist. But others, Elijah. And still others, one of the ancient prophets risen up.” LK9:20 But Jesus asked them: “But whom do you declare me to be?” 360 And Peter answered: “The Christ of The God!” 361
360 Whom do you declare me to be: Never do the apostles have the slightest idea that Jesus was God Himself, or in some mystical way connected to a triune Godhead. Nor was there anything in their Hebrew Bible that could have prepared them for such an idea.
361 The Christ of The God: Or, KJV: the Christ of God; NEB: God’s Messiah; BEC: the Savior whom God has sent; KNX: the Christ whom God has anointed; RIE: God’s Anointed. The Greek is TON [the] KRISTON [Christ] TOU [of the] THEOU [God]. Peter does not think that Jesus the Nazarene is more than the Anointed [Messiah] “The God” sent. Compare Acts 4:26, 27; 10:38.
LK9:21 Then Jesus warned them with the orders to tell no one about this. LK9:22 Jesus said: “It is necessary for the Son of Humankind to suffer many things, then be rejected by the elders, chief priests and Bible Copyists, and finally to be killed but raised up on the third day.”

Luke 9:23-27 – The Price of Discipleship

|| Matthew 10:33, 38, 39; 16:24-28; 362 Mark 8:34-38; 9:1; 363 John 12:25 364
362 Matthew 10:33, 38, 39; 16:24-28: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
363 Mark 8:34-38; 9:1: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.
364 John 12:25: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on John.

LK9:23 Then Jesus told them all: “If anyone wishes to follow me, 365 he must first deny himself, 366 and after picking up his own stake, 367 follow me continually every day.
365 If anyone wishes to follow me: As in other Gospels Jesus clearly explains the cost in following him. What some of this means is highlighted at the end of the chapter. Following Jesus involves: a] shouldering one’s own stake; that is, a life of self-sacrifice; b] denying personal desires and aims; and, c] a daily walk with Christ.
366 First deny himself: Or, NEB: he must leave self behind; GDS: disregard himself; KNX: renounce self; PME: give up all right to himself; WMS: he must say ‘No’ to self.
367 After picking up his own stake: Or, cross, pole. For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on STAUROO.
LK9:24 For whoever wishes to save his soul will lose it; but, whoever loses his soul on my account, this person will save it. LK9:25 What does it profit if a person gains the whole world but then loses himself, or suffers damage? LK9:26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Humankind will be ashamed 368 of when he returns 369 in the glory of his Father and the holy angels.
368 Ashamed: Compare 1 John 2:28. [Daniel 12:2]
369 When he returns: Or, comes. The parousia-judgment. [1 Corinthians 4:5] Compare notes at John 14:1-3 and 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17.
LK9:27 But I tell you this truth: there are some of those standing here who will not experience death before they see God’s Realm.” 370
370 Before they see God’s Realm: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew 16:28 and Mark 9:1.

Luke 9:28-36 – The Transfiguration

|| Matthew 17:1-9; 371 Mark 9:2-10 372
371 Matthew 17:1-9: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
372 Mark 9:2-10: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:28 Now it occurred about eight days after these words Jesus took Peter, John and James and went up into a mountain to pray. LK9:29 While Jesus was praying it happened that the appearance of his face changed and his clothing became dazzling white. LK9:30 And, look, two men – Moses and Elijah – appeared gloriously and LK9:31 began talking with Jesus, discussing his coming exodus to be realized shortly in Jerusalem. LK9:32 Now Peter and the others had become very sleepy and then fully awake they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. LK9:33 Then as the two men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him: “Master, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three tents – one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah!” But Peter had no idea what he was saying. LK9:34 Now while Peter was saying this, a cloud came and enveloped them, and the disciples became very frightened as they entered into the cloud. LK9:35 And a Voice came from the cloud, saying: “This is my Son, the Chosen One – listen to him!” LK9:36 After the Voice became silent, Jesus was suddenly alone. Then all the disciples were quiet and in those days not one of them ever reported the matter.

Luke 9:37-43a – A Demon Expelled and All Astonished

|| Matthew 17:14-18; 373 Mark 9:14-27 374
373 Matthew 17:14-18: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
374 Mark 9:14-27: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:37 Now the next day, after descending from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus. LK9:38 And, look, a man among the crowd cried out: “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only begotten! 375
375 Only begotten: The Greek is the same used of Christ, MONOGENES [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #3439, only child].
LK9:39 But, look, a demon seizes him! And suddenly it shrieks and throws him into a convulsion with foam at the mouth! It bruises him and hardly ever leaves him alone! LK9:40 And I begged your disciples to exorcise it but they were not able.” LK9:41 Now Jesus responded and said: “O, faithless and perverted generation! How long must I remain with you? Bring your son here!” LK9:42 While approaching Jesus the demon knocked the son down and caused him to have convulsions. Jesus rebuked the unclean demon and healed the child and returned him to his father. LK9:43a And everyone was amazed at the greatest of The God. 376
376 The greatest of The God: Or, KJV: the mighty power of God; RHM: the majesty of God; BER: the evidence of God’s great power; MOF: this grand display of God.

Luke 9:43b-45 – A Failure to Understand Jesus’ Death

|| Matthew 17:22; 377 Mark 9:30-32 378
377 Matthew 17:22: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
378 Mark 9:30-32: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:43b While all were marveling at everything he did, Jesus told his disciples: LK9:44 “Now stick this in your ears! 379 The Son of Humankind is about to be delivered into human hands!”
379 Now stick this in your ears: Or, sink down, ponder, listen carefully, store up, remember.
LK9:45 However, the disciples just did not understand this statement for it had been hidden from them that they might not understand. Also, they were afraid to ask Jesus about his statement.

Luke 9:46-48 – Who Is the Greatest?

|| Matthew 18:1-5; 380 Mark 9:38-40; 381 John 13:20 382
380 Matthew 18:1-5: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.
381 Mark 9:38-40: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.
382 John 13:20: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on John.

LK9:46 Now an argument arose among the disciples as to which one of them was the greatest. LK9:47 But Jesus was aware of the thought of their hearts. He took a little boy and placed the child in front of him, LK9:48 and then Jesus said to the disciples: “Whoever receives this little boy in my name, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives the One who sent me. For the least among you all is the greatest.”

Luke 9:49-50 – Attitude Toward Others

|| Mark 9:38-40 383
383 Mark 9:38-40: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Mark.

LK9:49 After Jesus said this John responded: “Master, we saw someone expelling demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he is not a follower among us.” LK9:50 But, Jesus told them all: “Do not prevent [such persons]! For whoever is not against you, is for you!”

Luke 9:51-56 – On to Jerusalem!

LK9:51 Now as the time drew closer for Jesus to be received up 384 his face became firmly set 385 to be on his way to Jerusalem.
384 Received up: Or, received up, ascend, taken up, taken back. The Greek is ANALEMPSEOS [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #354]. Compare notes on related words at Luke 17:34, 35; John 14:3; Acts 1:9.
385 His face became firmly set: Or, resolute, determined, made up his mind.
LK9:52 So Jesus sent messengers ahead of him into a Samaritan village to make arrangements for him. LK9:53 But they did not welcome Jesus because his face was determined to go up to Jerusalem. 386
386 Because his face was determined to go up to Jerusalem: Or, NEB: because he was making for Jerusalem; BAS: clearly going on to Jerusalem; KNX: because his journey was in the direction of. The problem is somewhat explained by John 4:20-25.
LK9:54 Now when the disciples James and John 387 became aware of this they asked Jesus: “Master, do you want us to call down fire from the sky to consume them?”
387 James and John: Called “Sons of Thunder.” [Mark 3:17]
LK9:55 Jesus turned and rebuked them, 388
388 Rebuked them: Some texts add: “You do not realize the attitude you two share. For the Son of Humankind did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” The two apostles reflect a common self-righteous judgmental attitude among some religious people. Jesus rebuked such an attitude. In this same chapter a similar situation revealed this same attitude. [Luke 9:49, 50]
LK9:56 and so they went to another village.

Luke 9:57-62 – Excuses for Not Following Jesus

|| Matthew 8:18-22 389
389 Matthew 8:18-22: For details see notes in Nazarene Commentary 2000 on Matthew.

LK9:57 Now as they were traveling on the road a certain man told Jesus: “I will follow you no matter where you go!” LK9:58 So Jesus told him: “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the sky have nests. But the Son of Humankind does not have a place to lay his head.” LK9:59 To another Jesus said: “Follow me.” 390 But he said to Jesus: “Master, permit me to leave and bury my father.”
390 Follow me: This account gives examples of what picking up the cross [stake/pole] means. Nothing can take priority over Nazarene discipleship. Compare Matthew 8:21, 22; 10:37; 22:5; Luke 14:33.
LK9:60 However, Jesus told him: “Let those dead bury their dead! Instead, you go and declare God’s Realm!” 391
391 Declare God’s Realm: Or, preach the kingdom. Discipleship includes the preaching of God’s kingdom.
LK9:61 Still another said: “I will follow you, Master, but first allow me to say good-bye to my family.” LK9:62 But Jesus told him: “No one who has put his hand to the plow and looks to the things behind is fit for God’s Realm.”
