THE SECOND LETTER TO TIMOTHY
Whereas First Timothy is an apostolic letter outlining how to conduct oneself in the Household of God, Second Timothy is more of a personal letter between two beloved friends and fellow Christian workers for the Faith. We imagine Paul, an older man confined in chains in a Roman jail, and his lonely agony. At night the sky is lit with the waxed and burning bodies of Christians who have been martyred for their Faith. It is a most dangerous time. He now writes an endearing epistle to one of his closest friends, Timothy. Evidently Timothy suffers from fear and embarrassment at being a Christian and now has retired to other pursuits. This letter is intended as an appeal to re-ignite the original fire and serve as a faithful soldier of Christ. Can Timothy muster up the spiritual strength to visit Paul in Rome one last time before his execution?
